As National Safety Month comes to a close, ISEE is taking this time to reflect on the key safety messages we shared throughout June. Each week focused on a different part of what keeps blasting operations safe and effective. From drilling to detonation, safety is built into every step.
Week 1: Straight Holes, Safer Blasts
We started the month with a focus on drilling accuracy. Poor spacing, burden, or hole depth can lead to serious issues like flyrock, uneven floors, and poor fragmentation. A detailed drill log and clear communication between the driller and blaster can help catch problems early. Drilling may come first, but it sets the tone for everything that follows.
Week 2: 3 Crucial Elements to Prevent Flyrock in Your Next Blast
This week, Richard O’Meara shared three key practices for preventing flyrock: reviewing the drill log, ensuring proper confinement, and keeping communication open. Flyrock is one of the most dangerous outcomes we face, and usually, one of the most preventable. With the right prep and teamwork, most issues can be avoided before loading even begins.
Week 3: Blast Clearance: The Final Step That Saves Lives
No matter how well a blast is planned or loaded, it must not go off unless the area is fully cleared. That starts with a solid Blast Area Security Plan and continues with real-time communication during loading. A final go or no-go decision must be made before firing. If something seems off, the right call is to delay. Protecting people always comes first.
Week 4: Firework Safety: A Professional Reminder for a Public Celebration
To finish the month, we turned our focus to fireworks ahead of July 4th. Even though consumer fireworks are different from professional blasting, the same safety principles still apply. Plan ahead, keep a safe distance, and treat all energetic materials with care. We encourage ISEE members to lead by example and help their communities celebrate safely.
Our Mission, Reinforced
Every message this month tied back to what we stand for: keeping people safe. Whether you’re loading a blast or lighting a sparkler, clear planning and communication make all the difference.
ISEE remains committed to our mission: “To enhance the safety, science, skill, and benefits of explosives engineering worldwide.”
Let’s carry this mindset with us year-round.
Work smart, Speak up, & Keep safety first.
