Description

This webinar covers geology factors in blast performance; flyrock; bulk explosives equipment; and blasting safety. If this webinar is being taken for retraining credit hours, a 20-question quiz must be completed after watching the webinar in its entirety. Users who score 75 percent or higher, and who submit a signed affidavit stating the entire webinar was watched, will receive a certificate of completion.

Speakers and Topics

Geology Level One+
Kurt Oakes, ISEE Board of Directors
Geology is one of the dominant factors affecting overall blast performance. This presentation will provide an illustrative view of geology and the associated various rock structures and physical characteristics that affect blast results. Blasters, drillers, and explosive engineers should understand rock characterization and their potential influence on blast results. Rock type and the structural formation of the rock mass to be blasted influence blast performance in many different ways. Various rock types exhibit unique inherent strengths and weaknesses based upon their composition. Structural variations and imperfections alter the geologic characteristics from their original depositional condition. Geologic structures and unconformities create barriers that affect and limit the ability of the explosive energy to fragment the rock mass. The blaster needs to have or develop the ability to “read the rock”, and identify characteristics that affect and influence the blast outcome. This presentation is not intended to be a geology text, but rather a discussion of geologic factors which can affect blast results. Terms used are recognized throughout the industry. The content of this presentation is based upon published text in the “18th Edition of the ISEE Blaster’s Handbook”.

Flyrock
Jay Elkin, Wampum Hardware
Flyrock is a blaster's worst nightmare. Planning for it is your best defense.

Bulk Explosives Equipment and Use
Mark Curry, Orica
An overview of the different form-functions of bulk equipment and trucks and their intended purpose and some “creative” uses of this equipment to load holes.

Blasting Safety Level One+
Maggie Hettinger, BME
The International Society of Explosives Engineers, Blasting Fundamentals Level 1+ Blasting Safety presentation provides a broad overview of various safety topics of importance to those in the blasting industry. Safety should be everyone’s first priority and the goal of this presentation is to reinforce that idea while touching on key blasting specific issues. The topics covered include how to plan a comprehensive safety program, the selection of qualified personnel, personal protective equipment, general hazards, blast site safety management, initiation system best practices, standard blast procedures, and the post-blast inspection process.
